Cat CT Scans in Dubai: When Might Your Cat Need Advanced Imaging?

09/06/2026 5 min read

When your cat is unwell, getting clear answers is often the first step towards helping them (and you!) feel better.

In some cases, a physical examination, blood tests, X-rays or ultrasound will give your veterinary team the information they need. But when a condition is more complex or when we need a much more detailed look inside your cat’s body a CT scan can be incredibly valuable.

At The Cat Vet, advanced imaging is always recommended thoughtfully and only when we believe it can provide important information about your cat’s health and help guide the best next steps.

What is a CT scan?

A CT (Computed Tomography) scan uses a series of X-ray images to create highly detailed, cross-sectional pictures of the body.

While a standard X-ray provides a two-dimensional image, a CT scan allows veterinarians to examine bones, soft tissues and internal structures in much greater detail. This can help us identify problems that may be difficult or sometimes impossible to see clearly with traditional imaging.

When might my cat need a CT scan?

Your veterinarian may recommend a CT scan when other diagnostic tests have not provided enough information, or when a particularly detailed view is needed.

CT scans can be especially helpful when investigating:

  • Persistent nasal discharge or breathing difficulties
  • Chronic ear problems or infections
  • Complex dental disease affecting the jaw or surrounding structures
  • Tumours and cancer staging
  • Fractures, injuries and orthopaedic conditions
  • Neurological symptoms, including balance problems or seizures
  • Internal abnormalities that are difficult to assess with X-rays or ultrasound

For example, a cat with ongoing nasal discharge may have had medication or other tests without a clear answer. A CT scan can provide a detailed view of the nasal passages and surrounding structures, helping the veterinary team better understand what may be causing the problem.

Why is a CT scan so useful?

The greatest benefit of CT imaging is detail.

A clearer picture can mean a more accurate diagnosis and a better-informed treatment plan. In some cases, a CT scan can also help with surgical planning by showing the exact size and location of an abnormality before a procedure takes place.

For cats with complex conditions, this additional information can make an important difference in deciding what to do next.

Is a CT scan safe for cats?

CT scans are considered very safe when performed by an experienced veterinary team.

Because cats need to remain completely still while the images are taken, a short general anaesthetic or sedation is usually required. This also helps minimise stress and allows the scan to be completed quickly and comfortably.

What happens on the day?

Your veterinary team will explain how to prepare your cat before their appointment. This may include fasting for several hours and completing pre-anaesthetic blood tests.

The CT scan itself usually takes only a few minutes, although your cat will need additional time for preparation and recovery from anaesthesia.

Most cats are able to return home the same day.

Once home, your cat may be a little sleepy. A quiet, warm place to rest, a small meal once they are fully awake, and some extra observation are usually all that is needed. Your veterinary team will provide specific instructions based on your cat and the procedure performed.

Helping us find the answers your cat needs

Not every cat needs a CT scan, and advanced imaging should never be recommended simply because the technology is available.

At The Cat Vet, we look at the whole picture: your cat’s symptoms, examination findings, previous test results and individual needs. If a CT scan is recommended, we will explain why we believe it may help, what we hope to learn, and how the results could influence your cat’s treatment.

Our goal is simple: to use the right diagnostic tools, at the right time, to help us make the best possible decisions for your cat.

If you are concerned about your cat’s health or would like to discuss whether advanced imaging may be helpful, please contact our team.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a CT scan for a cat cost in Dubai?

The cost varies depending on the area being examined, the urgency for the report, whether contrast is required, and the complexity of the investigation. You will receive a detailed estimate before the procedure.

Does my cat need to be anaesthetised for a CT scan?

Yes, cats need to remain completely still to obtain clear, accurate images, so a short general anaesthetic or sedation is required. All anaesthetics at The Cat Vet are monitored by a qualified veterinary nurse and with the use of advanced multi-parameter monitors.

How long does a CT scan take?

The scan itself usually takes only a few minutes. However, the full appointment including preparation, anaesthesia and recovery may take several hours.

Is a CT scan better than an X-ray?

Not necessarily, each has a different purpose. X-rays are ideal for many routine investigations, while CT scans provide much more detail and are particularly useful for complex conditions involving the head, nose, teeth, ears, bones and other internal structures.

Can a CT scan detect cancer in cats?

A CT scan can help identify masses or tumours, assess their size and location, and look for signs of spread to other areas of the body. It is often an important part of cancer investigation and treatment planning.

Will my cat need to stay overnight?

Most cats can return home on the same day. Occasionally, additional monitoring or treatment may be recommended depending on your cat’s condition.
