You may have already chosen a litter for your pet cat. However, to give them the best experience, we recommend that you follow our advice below:
1. Where should you place the cat litter box?
The litter box should be ideally placed in an isolated and quiet place, away from high traffic spaces such as walkways, near doors, or central areas like the middle of a room.
2. What size should the litter box be?
It is essential to get the litter box size right for your cat to ensure it gets into the habit of using it. According to your cat’s size, make sure the litter box is big enough for your cat to turn around inside it without constraint. If the litter box isn’t comfortable, your cat might stop using it.
3. Amount and consistency of cat litter
The litter should be grainy, absorbent and be layered thick enough for digging and covering your cats’ faeces. An approximate 3-inch thickness is usually good enough to absorb odours as well.
4. Factors to consider when choosing your cat litter
Your cat’s litter should have a natural look to it. Bright artificial-looking litters are not ideal for making your cat feel comfortable.
- When deciding to buy litter, you must consider whether you would like to go for a scented one or an unscented one. While scented litters can absorb odours well, they may keep your cat from using them if he or she doesn’t like them. Unscented litter is usually based on naturally absorbent plants and other materials.
- When choosing the consistency of your cat’s litter, it is very important to note that clumping materials make clean up easier and can usually work wonderfully for odour control.
- You can purchase plant-based litter for an environmentally friendly option. There are several options, including clay, coconut husk, wheat or silica. All of these have different attributes. Some may clump or not, and (or remove) some may be excellent as an odour deterrent. The trick is to get the one that suits your cat and your preference
5. Keeping the litter tray clean
Of course, your cats’ litter tray needs to be cleaned thoroughly on a regular basis. This will help your cat maintain proper litter use. Depending on the frequency of your cats’ litter box usage and the litter type you choose, make sure you clean and change the litter as often as possible for good hygiene for your cat and your home.
