Vaccination

At The Cat Vet, we follow the UAE Regulations and WSAVA guidelines when vaccinating your cat. We vaccinate annually for Rabies and feline panleukopenia, feline herpesvirus, and feline calicivirus. We do not follow the “one-size-fits-all” approach when determining the appropriate vaccinations for your cat. Instead, we always listen carefully to understand your cat’s behaviour, vulnerabilities, and environmental needs. For kittens, we highly recommend vaccinations regardless of whether they will eventually be indoor or outdoor cats. Their vaccination course will start at approximately 9 weeks of age and be repeated every 3 to 4 weeks until approximately 16 weeks of age. At your kitten’s first consultation, our veterinarians will discuss a vaccination schedule as well as treatment plans such as deworming and parasite prevention.

There are core vaccines and non-core vaccines for cats. Core vaccines are highly recommended for all cats and include Rabies, Feline Herpesvirus, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia (often combined in the FVRCP vaccine). Non-core vaccines, given based on the cat's lifestyle and risk factors, may include Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV) and others.

Kittens typically start their vaccination series at around 6 to 8 weeks old. They generally receive booster shots every 3 to 4 weeks until they are about 16 to 20 weeks old. After the initial series, boosters are given every 1 to 3 years, depending on the vaccine and your vet’s recommendation.

Yes, vaccinations are essential to protect your cat against serious and potentially life-threatening diseases. In the UAE, core vaccines include protection against feline panleukopenia, calicivirus, and herpesvirus (cat flu), which are highly contagious. The rabies vaccine is also mandatory.

Vaccinations are not only vital for your cat’s health, but they are also required for Dubai Municipality registration, and are often mandatory for grooming, boarding, and travel—both locally and internationally. Keeping your cat’s vaccines up to date ensures they stay protected and meet all legal and facility requirements.

Cats may experience mild to moderate side effects, including slight lethargy or reduced appetite, which usually resolve within a day or two. Occasionally, cats may have mild swelling at the injection site. Severe reactions are rare but can include symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, and difficulty breathing. Always consult your vet if you're concerned.
